Kaikoen is the ruins of Komoro Castle which was also called as "Hakutsuru (white crane) Castle" and "Suigetsu (drunken moon) Castle." There is a large wooden tablet of calligraphy by Prince Tokugawa Iesato on San no Mon (the third gate), that simply reads "Kaikoen."
Located at the source of the Yukawa River, the Shiraito Falls is where hundreds of thin streams just like Shiraito (white thread) falls into the curved rock wall and gives you pleasant coolness.
The pond is where the reflection of the seasonal trees in the gentle water surface creates a beautiful scenery. The fresh spring greenery and the colourful autumn leaves make it a must-see destination in Karuizawa.
It is an observation park located near the summit of Usui Pass at an altitude of 1,200m. This is the prefecture boundary between Nagano and Gunma where you could overlook the Southern Alps, Yatsugatake, and Mount Asama. Near the entrance of the platform and along the old Nakasendo trail, there are wayside teahouses for you to try famous local sweets called Chikaramochi. You can also enjoy forest bathing while taking a stroll on the walking trails.
Mikasa Street is the road that leads from the Kyu-Karuizawa Rotary to the Former Mikasa Hotel. There are larch trees lined up along the street that has been selected as one of the 100 beautiful roadside trees in Japan. This is a great place to cherish the seasonal transition in Karuizawa, looking for larch buds in eary summer and driving yellow golden road in the autumn leaf season.
The park is the art of lava, shaped by volcanic sediment deposited during the 1783 big eruption of Mount Asama.
